Invitation Letter to Spain

The invitation letter to Spain is a declaration of responsibility made by a Spanish citizen (or EU beneficiary or legally resident foreigner) who invites a non-EU national to stay at their home for up to 90 days.
This document is required because, to enter Spanish territory, the visitor must prove where they will stay—by showing a hotel reservation or, in this case, the invitation letter.
Exceptionally, one invitation can cover multiple people, but each additional invitee incurs an extra fee equal to the standard letter fee.
Application
At the local Police Station in your place of residence, request the invitation letter application form, which looks like this:
Required Documents
Attachments vary by Police Station but typically include:
- Proof of housing availability (deed of ownership, lease agreement, or similar).
- Photo ID of the applicant.
- Collective registration certificate (listing all residents at the address).
After submission, the Police Station will appoint an officer who may request a personal interview to verify your information. Failure to attend without valid reason will result in the application being considered withdrawn.
Processing Time
The timeframe varies by Police Station, usually between two weeks and one month.
Denial
Any refusal must be motivated and specify:
- The appeals available against the decision.
- The authority where an appeal must be filed.
- The deadline for filing an appeal.
