Apply for NIE and Spanish NIF
The NIF and NIE are identification documents for individuals or legal entities. Let’s see what they are and answer if it is possible to acquire them from Colombia.
The N.I.E. (Foreigner’s Identity Number) is the personal, non-transferable, unique and sequential or consecutive document that is issued for the purpose of providing unequivocal identification to foreigners residing in Spain who are related to Spain for economic, professional or social interests, in accordance with the provisions of Article 206 of the Regulation of the Organic Law 4/2000, on the rights and freedoms of foreigners in Spain and their social integration, approved by Royal Decree 557/2011.
The TAX IDOn the other hand, it is an indispensable document for those people who need to carry out any operation with legal transcendence in Spain, **N.I.F. is the Tax Identification Number.**issued by the State Agency of Tax Administration, this also serves as identification that individuals or legal entities must have to pay taxes, being essential if you want to operate at a business level, even to issue and receive invoices.
NIE #1 Número de Identidad de Extranjeros (Foreigner’s Identity Number)
With this number, the foreign citizen can carry out various procedures before the Spanish Tax Agency, as well as before other government entities, Notaries, Courts, Banks, Universities and Companies, among others. (Signing employment contracts, pursuing studies, opening bank accounts, purchasing goods and services, receiving inheritances and pensions, etc.).
The NIE also serves as a Tax Identification Number (N.I.F.) for tax purposes for foreigners in Spain.
The NIE assignment accepts the following applications:
- Those presented in Spain personally by the interested party.
- Those presented in Spain through a representative.
- Those submitted to the Spanish Diplomatic Representations or Consular Offices located in the applicant’s country of residence.
Consequently, foreigners who are related to Spain due to their economic, professional or social interests may apply for a NIE in person at the General Directorate of the Police, either directly or through the Spanish Consular Offices abroad, depending exclusively on whether they are residing in Spain or abroad.
That is to say, Colombian citizens not residing in Spain, who need to carry out some specific procedures without the need to be in Spain, may obtain their NIE through the General Consulate of Spain in Bogota.
- Application form EX-15 duly completed (digitally, not by hand) and signed.
- Passport. Original and photocopy of the personal data sheet.
- Written and signed by the interested party, in which he/she briefly explains the economic, professional or social reasons that have led him/her to request a N.I.E. This letter must be accompanied by the communication from the Spanish organization that requires the N.I.E. from the interested party.
- Tariff. which must be paid IN CASH directly at the consulate, which for assignment of NIE (Foreigner’s Identity Number) is $43,300 COP for 2022.

This procedure must be done personally, or through a representative duly accredited by means of a notarized power of attorney, notarized and apostilled.
NIF – Tax Identification Number
The NIF can also be acquired through the consulate, within the framework of the mutual collaboration agreement between the State Agency of Tax Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation signed in the interest of administrative simplification, reduction of burdens and improvement of the relations of our country with non-resident individuals and entities, an electronic procedure was established to process the application and assignment of the NIF of individuals and entities, through the Spanish Consular Offices in the country of residence of the holder.
This measure includes the NIFs of applicants type ‘L’ (Spaniards residing abroad who are not required to have a National Identity Document); type ‘M’ (individuals without Spanish nationality who do not have a Foreigner’s Identity Number) and type ‘N’ (legal entities and non-resident entities without a permanent establishment in Spain).
At the Consulate General of Spain in Bogota, you can apply for it by presenting the following documents:
- Form 030to be completed in its entirety.
- In case the application is submitted through a representative, documentation proving the representation, i.e. power of attorney before a Spanish notary or foreign power of attorney duly apostilled.
- Attach a certified copy of the document that identifies you.
- Document certifying residence in the consular district corresponding to the Consular Post to which the application is submitted
Finally, the Tax Identification Number is delivered to the interested party through this Consulate General.
In conclusion, we can affirm that both processes, of such great importance, do not require a trip to Spain, but can be carried out from Colombia, thus saving time and money.
