Certificate of Criminal Record in Peru

The judicial record certificate is an official document that certifies whether or not a person has been convicted of having committed a crime. This document is a common requirement for different matters, many of them related to entering a country as a foreign national, but it may also be required to carry out various personal procedures before public and private institutions.

The Criminal Record Certificate in Peru is valid for 90 calendar days and is an official document issued by the Penitentiary Registry Office, which certifies whether or not a person has a criminal record.

Requirements to apply for a Criminal Record Certificate

To carry out this procedure, you only need a valid ID: either your National Identity Card (DNI), your Peruvian or foreign passport, or your foreigner’s card.

The service is available for Peruvian nationals and foreigners over 18 years of age. The deadline for delivery is up to 30 minutes, as long as there is no judicial record or homonymy. If the process leaves in the status “Observed” the deadline is extended to a total of three working days, in accordance with Supreme Decree No. 237-2018-JUS Sole Text of Administrative Procedures (TUPA) and Presidential Resolution No. 781-2010-INPE/P of the National Penitentiary Institute.

Step by Step to Apply for a Criminal Record in Peru

You can apply for your Electronic Criminal Record Certificate (CAP) online with the following step by step.

  1. Make the corresponding payment in the payment platform
  2. Enter the requested data on the Judicial Branch website; at the end of the registration confirmation will be issued.
  3. If you do not have any criminal record, you will be able to download your certificate immediately.
  4. You will receive an e-mail with the link to download the document.

If your name appears in the Judicial Branch database, the following text will appear at the end of the process: “Process observed”. You will have to wait a maximum of 30 minutes to receive the email with your certificate in PDF format* If you make your request outside working hours, the certificate will be delivered the next business day.

This is also a document which requires a payment equivalent to 0.902 % of the UIT, S/.37.70 (Thirty seven and 70/100 Soles).

The Electronic Judicial Background Check does not apply to:

  • Peruvian citizens born abroad.
  • Peruvian nationalized foreigners.
  • Foreigners who do not have a Temporary Permit to Stay (PTP) or a foreigner’s card.
  • Foreign citizens who have initiated their procedure in the Migration platform.
  • Persons who are incarcerated in a penitentiary establishment.
